Operating Systems Distributions Supported

The latest version of the ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite is designed to support the following Linux distributions:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux suite
  • Novell/SuSE product suite
  • Ubuntu
  •  

    • The ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite mayinstall on a number of other Linux distributions. Refer to the PackageGeneration installation instructions for more information.

     

    • AMD has accepted contributed packagingscripts to allows creation of other packages, but does not necessarilytest, verify or warrant the reliability. Currently Red Hat EnterpriseLinux suite and Novell/SuSE product suite are supported Linuxdistributions

System Requirements

Before attempting to install the ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite, the following software must be installed:

  • XOrg 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2 or 7.3
  • Linux Kernel 2.6 and above
  • glibc version 2.2 or 2.3
  • POSIX Shared Memory (/dev/shm) support is required for 3D applications

The ATI Catalyst™ Linux software suite nolonger provides precompiled Kernel Modules; all installations requireGCC compiler and kernel-headers or kernel-source in order to enable 2Dand 3D acceleration.

For best performance and ease of use, AMD recommends the following:

  • Kernel module build environment – should include the following:
Kernel source code: Either the Kernel Source or Kernel Headers packages
  • The rpm utility should be installed and configured correctly on your system, if you intend to install via RPM packages

The following packages must be installed in order for the ATI Catalyst™ Linux driver to install and work properly:

  • XFree86-Mesa-libGL
  • libstdc++
  • libgcc
  • XFree86-libs
  • fontconfig
  • freetype
  • zlib

 

Resolved Issues

The following section provide a briefdescription of resolved issues with the latest version of the ATICatalyst™ Linux software suite. These include:

  • The X-Server will not start on Red Hat WS4u6 with some ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series devices. Further details can befound in topic number 737-38605
  • Screen corruption may occur when usingCatalyst Control Center keyboard shortcuts to change display modes.Further details can be found in topic number 737-38603
  • Crossfire cannot be enabled in full screen mode. Further details can be found in topic number 737-38604
  • With the display driver installed, startingX can cause RHEL4u6/ RHEL4u6x86 operating system to stop responding.Further details can be found in topic number 737-38601
  • Enabling OpenGL overlay may result in thesystem failing to respond during the X-Server initialization. Furtherdetails can be found in topic number 737-38600
  • Enabling dual adapter with the followingcommand “aticonfig –initial=dual-head” may cause a segmentation fault.Further details can be found in topic number 737-38599
  • Screen corruption occurs when enable”Reflection” effect in compiz setting manager. Further details can befound in topic number 737-38598
  • System fails to respond when switching to another console then back to X. Further details can be found in topic number 737-38597
  • Screen corruption may occur when playing some video files using Mplayer. Further details can be found in topic number 737-38596
  • Direct rendering is not enabled through non Root user accounts for SUSE 10.2
  • Non Root accounts may experience asegmentation fault in dual adapter mode. Further details can be foundin topic number 737-35594
  • Starting X with component video output can result in no display. Further details can be found in topic number 737-38593
  • Failure building RHEL 5.2 and RHEL 4u6 RPMpackages using the ATI Installer. Further details can be found in topicnumber 737-38592
  • Enabling anti-aliasing setting in CatalystControl Center requires restarting the X-Server for each filter settingto take effect. Further details can be found in topic number 737-38579
  • Some systems may become unstable and hang the X Server when logging off. Further details can be found in topic number 737-38582
  • The entire X desktop including the mousecursor is no longer choppy during playback of video files. Furtherdetails can be found in topic number 737-38581
  • Starting X no longer results in a systemhang on Radeon X1000 series AGP cards with the AGP aperture differentfrom 128 MB starting. Further details can be found in topic number737-38580
  • Quickly moving a X video window no longerresults in occasional corruption being left behind on the desktop whenusing Radeon X1000 series hardware or later. Further details can befound in topic number 737-38579
  • Maya 2008 may stop responding when rendering some models. Further details can be found in topic number 737-38591

Known Issues

The following section provides a briefdescription of known issues associated with the latest version of ATICatalyst™ Linux software suite. These issues include:

  • Multi-adapter secondary monitor cannot be enabled using Catalyst Control Center.
  • SPECViewperf 8.1: Running the standard DPPTtests may intermittently result in the RHEL 5.2 operating systemfailing to respond on systems containing an ATI FireGL V7700 series ofproduct.
  • Maya 2008 terminates during rendering.
  • After installing driver, log file reports error “Failed to enable interrupts” in log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log .
  • SuSe10.3 system hangs while logging on X Server after driver package installation.
  • Quickly moving a X video window no longerresults in occasional corruption being left behind on the desktop onRadeon X1000 series hardware or later.
  • Closing Xterm may intermittently result in either kernel panic or a system hang.
