Team Ownership

For recent two years, I have repeatedly heard about people thinking of themselves out of a team. I don’t mean, these are hostile or not friendly to others. Mostly these people are very kind and friendly, and some of them are fond of going for alcohol with colleagues. However, the problem is that they don’t know what the collaboration is.

They usually think the friendship with other colleagues makes sure their team spirit, which is not true, or at least partly true. I believe that the great teamwork comes from mutual trust and frequent feedbacks. Without trust, you are nothing in your team. You are not able to get help from others and you don’t want to help others voluntarily. Shortly, you are meaningless in the team. Too harsh? Well, it might be, but it’s true that you are not part of a team. If members are not interested in the teamwork, or don’t have a common purpose, the team is not a team any more.

Why I get angry? In fact, many engineers in the field of game development are not like to share their work with others. Occasionally, I meet the man who considers their work as their own property. It’s funny. If you really want to make it yours, you shouldn’t have made a contract with a company. You had better work alone, not with a team. Sometimes, it is tempting to use source codes as a weapon. If I am the only person who is able to read and understand it, managers or other colleagues don’t treat me in inappropriate ways. The only way you can protect yourself is to make things a mess. It’s pathetic, isn’t it? I always believe that if you really want to keep you safe from layoffs or else, then you should keep yourself new and open to everything including technologies and people.
