XP: Fatal apathy

What is ‘Fatal apathy’?
1. Fatal apathy: “We do nothing, because you cannot do everything”
2. Typical reactions are:
– Our architecture is not suited for that
– That is not how we work here
– We can’t convince our management
– If we change this we have to change everything
– We can’t change the past
– We do not have any proof or evidence it will help us; it is speculation

기대 효과 (Expected effects)
1. It’s kind of an anti-progress meme. :  to reduce the hope of better productivity

접근 방법 I (First Howto)
One key here is to recognize that you’re dealing with someone’s defective mental model, and avoid asking “why” like the plague. With this kind of problem, “why” questions are almost always going to keep going further into the conceptual maze that the other person can’t break out of.

접근 방법 I에 대한 반론 (Objection to ‘First Howto’)
1. I think that one reason the approach you outlined works so well is because all of their resistance is channeled into that other activity: making the list.
2. A different approach would be to ask people to suspend disbelief, and then ask them to physically go through the process of making some methods public and live with the work long enough to assess whether the things they’d feared were significant, or whether they were inflated by the fear of doing something that they had considered wrong.

2. My goal in eliciting their concerns was not to overcome resistance, or even to reduce it, or even call it resistance. My goal was to understand their concerns and honor them.
So I think one thing that made it work is that I was honoring people’s concerns every step of the way, and I believe they felt at every step that I was honoring their concerns.
