Sometimes I’ve visited “kangmi.org”. ( KangMi(강미) is a hard-learner of Korean language. )

A few moments ago, I saw a word “hangulization” in her blog. It can be translated to “한글화” in Korean. It’s fun that non-native speakers of Korean have their own words like non-nativce speakers of English do.

How does the term “한글화” compare to “외래어를 한글로 표기하다”?

“Hangulization” is a noun but “외래어를 한글로..” is an expression. So, I felt that I had to find a more suitable word. “한글화” is a noun which have the same meaning as “외래어를…”.  cool hmm

Hi,

Actually, hanguli(z|s)ation can be considered to be a 100% English word, really, as it is based on a [more or less] common suffix [~ization] (== ~化), and is no more strange than say, hmmmm, palatalisation – which I bet is a stranger word to you, even in Korean [口蓋音化], or umlautization [母音變化]. After all, the field of phonetics is no more (and no less) specialized as the field of Korean as a foreign language… or of Germanistics

Cheers,

Wow, new style!

  제가 직접 만든 것은 아닙니다. 제가 사용하는 설치형 블로그 Expression Engine 제작사에서 주최한 템플릿 컨테스트에서 뽑힌 작품을 약간 수정했습니다.

dda, both palatalisation and umlautization were new to me, but I’ve actually seen palatisation since (only in English, not in Korean). “

It’s good to know that you consider hangulization to be English…I have a (perhaps unreasonable) horror of the word “Konglish.”

And 한자 filed for future reference.

kaistizen, nice template choice. I’ve been thinking of adapting one of the new ones to my site.

examples of umlautization:
ㅚ ==> ö [until the 1950s, I think], today [öe]
ㅏ+ㅣ => ㅐ => e [was a diphtongue until early 20th Century]

examples of palatalization:
됴ㅎ다 [sorry don’t have old Korean on my computer. ㅎ is ㅎ + 아래 아] ==> 좋다 [됴==>조]

kaistizen님, 제가 강미님의 블로그 말고 이 공간에서 덧글을 계속 써서 죄송합니다…
